According to the WHO, in 2020 and 2021 the US recorded more than 930,000 excess deaths, behind India (4.7m), Russia (1.1m) and Indonesia (1m).

Do those three countries count as developed? The author could be relying on that qualifier. As a U.S. citizen, I would rather be compared to places like France, Germany, Japan, etc. than them (no offense ment, but we’re talking about aspirations).

I’m curious on how that translates in population density? The US is (on average) a fair bit lower in density compared to other countries, and still had atrocious numbers for Covid
