probably has something to do with them being materialists and understanding that geopolitics is more complex than good guys vs bad guys

Oh yeah sure.
International law is pretty clear though.
Specifically on wars of aggression.
Like the one in February 2022 by Russia who illegally invaded Ukraine.
No need to assert goodness or badness on anyone or anything, but it is very clear Russia is guilty of breaking international law. (As usual.)
