It’s here: the last big update before we apply to the App Store! We’ve got some exciting new features and a bunch of awesome fixes for you:

NEW ADDITIONS

  • Back by popular demand: the old compact mode! We’ve given it a little bit of a touch-up in the process. The previous not-very-compact compact mode is now called “headline,” and large is still, well, large.
  • New search UX: We gave community search a whole tab of its own, featuring recent search history (clearable, of course) and a much smoother UI. Keep an eye on that tab–we’ve got big plans for it down the road.
  • Reporting Content. We added ability to report posts and comments via context or the ellipsis menu. These reports will be sent to community moderators.

BUG FIXES

  • Optimized image loading to improve scroll performance significantly
  • Fixed spelling mistake (thanks J0hnny007)
  • Fixed bug where link posts made it hard or impossible to enter the comments
  • Fixed bug where NSFW tags were sometimes missing
  • Fixed bug where new posts required a link and body text
  • Fixed issue where comment times could show up with incorrect times

KNOWN ISSUES

  • Cross-instance subscriptions are currently not displaying. This is a server-side problem, nothing we can do about it :(
  • Link posts are a little choppy in the feed–we’re working on smoothing that out

Keep in mind that this is beta software (though not for much longer)–there may be bugs, and we want to hear about them!

Thanks again for using Mlem! We hope you love it as much as we do.

Cheers,

The Mlem Team

Down the road we’re looking at integration with standard video hosting sites to let them play inline nicely. The primary challenge isn’t technical but financial: most of those APIs cost money, and the project doesn’t have any. We have to have some discussions about how we want to offer features like that (and push notifications, which also cost money to run) without compromising our ideal of being a donation-driven project—we need to avoid suddenly ending up in the hole for money that we don’t have. Once we’ve decided on an approach, though, we’ll definitely be set up to provide a seamless dog video browsing experience :)

FAQ

  • When will insert feature here be implemented?
    • Check our issue board–if there isn’t an issue open for the feature you want, feel free to open an issue or make post! Just remember that devs are people too–we’re doing this for free in our spare time, and building a quality app takes a lot of patient work.
  • Is Mlem available for Android?
    • No. Mlem is written using SwiftUI, which is not currently supported on Android. If such support becomes available, we will look into bringing Mlem to our Android friends.
  • How do I join the beta?
    • We are currently testing our new 2.0 codebase on TestFlight. We have two beta groups: a weekly group that receives the current state of our development branch every week, and a stable group that receives a curated pre-release build at the end of each development cycle.
