It’s basically “what if instead of collapsing, the USSR was killed in an invasion”. Devs are Estonian, it’s definitely inspired by Post-Soviet countries.

Specifically it was the Lenin segment on whether communists should participate in bourgeois elections, where Lenin argues that communists should participate by organizing as a communist party. They will have no expectation of winning, because bourgeois democracy is a myth, but it will be useful to spread propaganda and explicitly to show that bourgeois democracy is rigged.

Saying this means “LENIN WOULD HAVE VOOTED FOR BIDEN” was one of the most pathetic things I’ve ever seen, and the bar for liberal politics streamers is already in hell.

Is that really the shit that republicans froth at the mouth over?

Yes. They froth at literally anything, then the dems attempt to “triangulate” (IE attract fascist voters, which doesn’t work anymore, if it ever did) and move further right to compensate, which then lets the GOP go even furtherer to the right in reaction. This is fairly common knowledge even among liberals, but they don’t think a better world is possible.

why don’t these people notice that their talking points, left-oriented as they may seem, always end up supporting US allies or attacking US enemies?

A combination of the american civic religion, american exceptionalism, their own material conditions, recognition of their position as the secondary (or perhaps tertiary) benefactors of imperialism, and a century of anti-communist propaganda have left them believing the following:

  • The US may SOMETIMES do evil, but that is either by mistake or the cost of doing business, and it is ultimately a net progressive force for “democracy” and “freedom” aka “good”
  • No matter how bad the US is, every AES is/was worse
  • Every enemy of the US cannot be trusted, so they can only consume propaganda media produced by the US and its allies
  • The US is actually a democracy, and policy can be influenced by voters

Whenever you bring up things that force them to address the dissonance between one of these and reality, they use the the other three to deflect. If you continue to press further, they either disengage, call you a tankie, or start the long slow path to tankiedom themselves.

In Reagan’s memoirs, he drew a direct line from the film to the signing.

I’m pretty sure those were ghostwritten because Reagan would’ve been way too far down the path of dementia by then, no?

It’s worth noting that Fidel couldn’t have pressed the button even if he wanted to, because the nukes were under the direct control of the USSR. At one point he did sendt a telegram to Khrushchev saying to launch the nukes if the US invaded Cuba, and IIRC Robert MacNamara later recounted that Fidel told him he would have approved of the use of tactical nuclear weapons.
