Setting up a Matrix account is pretty simple.

Go to Element’s registration page (it’s currently the most popular frontend for Matrix)

Set your homeserver (under “Host an account on”) to one of these servers (the matrix.org homeserver sucks)

Username, password, done. (the email section will be removed once you switch to a homeserver that doesn’t require one)
