To be fair, often times that question is code for “how can someone contribute to that platform while also paying rent, feeding their kids, etc.”

I think that’s a fair question and IMHO, for a fedi project to succeed, we need some people who can get paid a reasonable wage to focus their full attention on the work.

We’re likely going to continue to see folks who ask for Patreon donations and set up fedi hosting businesses, like Ruud at Lemmy World. We’ll also probably see more folks like the Tapbots gang selling fancy clients for a price.

Individual people will make money so they can live life, but cash cow corporations likely won’t be a thing.

Not a great day for social media. Twitter down, Reddit has not 3rd party apps, Lemmy is being hugged to death by people bailing Reddit and Twitter.

I guess I’ll go outside.

Having used both, Penpot still had a feature gap. For example, prototyping in Figma is much farther along. Penpot is still stuck in Invision land.

Can someone explain like I’m 5 for the new folks here what this means in terms of the user experience?

What are the restrictions around viewing and commenting on posts?

Does this impact, for example, beehaw to lemmy.world the same way as lemmy.world to beehaw?

What mod tools would beehaw need to remain federated?

Agreed. It sucks that a lack of good mod tools forced this to happen. Having multiple passwords and accounts isn’t a great experience.

The people that preorder clearly aren’t listening

After the past 2 years I’m definitely going in cautiously with anything owned by MS. GamePass is decent, but their studios have been whiffing it lately.

Reddit has amazing SEO, and it looks like Spez is now hell bent on destroying that as well.

What a fucking incompetent moron. Google hates when people put roadblocks over mobile web experiences. Over the past 5-ish years they’ve down ranking sites that obstruct m.web.

Problem is that a) new users don’t know that they can join communities across servers, and b) it is intuitive use start with the servers that a lot of people like.

Instance browsing and onboarding is probably the biggest challenge to Lemmy’s growth. The current experience either scares new people away, or encourages them to congregate on a limited set of instances.
