For the most part, replace it if/when the chain starts slipping. It normally starts on the small rings on the back.
Get a chain wear tool (just a piece of metal with 2 lengths), replace the chain if its beyond the second wear mark, this will mean the chainrings get worn down a lot less. having a worn chain will trash your chainrings relatively fast.
Its not something that will break suddenly, it just gets more and more annoying. My bike is at almost 13,000Km and is on its second set of chainrings.

I actually donāt know how old the stuff on my bike is, but I have a fancy sticker that says ātested for safety by the police departmentā¦ in 2013ā, so yeah, Iām a bit nervous about the consumables.
