I’ve seen 2×2 comics (and 4×1 comics for that matter) in newspapers before smartphone existed.

So unless they were adapted for PDAs this is complete bull.

Oh, at least Japan has been doing four panel comics since 1902: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yonkoma
