My guess would be dead communities that didn’t really need to be made in the first place. Such as dead duplicates of already popular communities or communities made by people with no intention of keeping them active.

Never a bad thing to make a new community, just a shame how many dead ones there are. It is a lot of work to keep a community active.

I suppose I have seen a few niche topic communities in my short time already that haven’t updated in a while. I imagine it’s hard to get a user base big enough to get consistent posting like on Reddit as this is a relatively new type of platform.
