Pioneering musician/producer Brian Eno talks about rising inequality and how to make the super rich pay a wealth tax. He himself has become a multi-millionaire from his art.
The bus in the background is paid for by a group called Patriotic Millionaires who also have other strategies for closing the wealth gap.
They don’t need to ask, they can just do it, yet they don’t.
Do what? Write an extra check to the IRS?
I imagine members of a group like this are already involved in putting their wealth to good use, but if not, then sure, they could do more. Do you know that they don’t? They’re at least spending part of their time and treasure advocating for fairer sharing of burden.
But the point of this is not only their individual contributions, it’s in putting to work the wealth of everyone else who have much accumulated as well.
Even if he gave away nearly all his wealth to help the needy, that doesn’t fix the problem. Ultimately it’s the choice of the rich what to do with their money and most of them won’t choose to give it away. Changing the system is more important than one rich person being generous.
