For now, I can only visit a community from another server by searching or opening a post from that server, if I open it in the postโs original server or if I open their site, Iโll be in another lemmy instance and Iโll have no account there, so I canโt really interact.
So, Iโm curious if is there a way for me to browse lemmy.ml for example (or other servers) and see all the trending posts there or browse their communities without me leaving lemmy.world
Basically, looking for a way to turn my current instance to be like a โwindowโ that I can use to look into another instances.
Liftoff has an all instance view you can enable if that is what you are looking for and donโt mind using an app
yes, thatโs whatโs Iโve been using, and I know I can see posts from all instances if I just browse All instead of Local
what Iโm kind of looking for (and wondering) is that a way toโฆ uh, like, check? on another instance, and see what hot posts are trending there just on their front page without getting mixed and competing for places in /All
so for example, Iโm here on lemmy.world, and after browsing a while I got curious on whatโs trending on sh.itjust.works, so I go to shi.tjust.works and I can see all the currently hot posts only on shit just works without me getting logged out because I have no account on shitjustworks.
in lack of better words, maybe emulating (or simulating?) a โcentralizedโ feel, ya feel me?
I donโt believe there is a smooth way to do this at the moment without visiting the instance in question and selecting the Local feed.
You can use a link redirect script to then easily open those threads on your home instance, though.
Donโt know about lemmy, but on kbin you can go to /d/lemmy.world to see what appears to be something like a frontpage of lemmy.world.
Itโs far from perfect though:
- It only shows that instanceโs local communities. In other words, you wouldnโt see that a lemmy.world community is trending on feddit.uk without going to feddit.uk itself.
- If the lemmy server has the concept of a downvote that would reduce a postโs rank, that isnโt information transmitted to other instances.
- I might be mistaken here, but if I understood correctly, it only shows posts from communities that at least one user on your kbin instance is subscribed to.
- It will most likely be a bit out of date
- If the list of (de)federated instances isnโt the same for your instance and the target instance, the upvotes of entire instances might not be counted for one of them.
- In future, some instances might determine ranking solely based on local votes.
