BYD said Monday it produced more than 3 million new energy vehicles in 2023, putting the Chinese electric car giant on track to surpass Tesla’s production for a second straight year.

The U.S. electric car company had yet to release full-year figures as of Tuesday in Asia. Tesla said it produced 1.35 million cars during the first three quarters of 2023.

In 2022, Tesla produced 1.37 million vehicles, fewer than BYD’s 1.88 million. New energy vehicles include battery-powered and hybrid models.

Most of BYD’s cars sell in a lower price range than Tesla’s, and come in hybrid versions. Elon Musk’s automaker only sells purely battery-powered cars. China accounted for about one-fifth of Tesla’s sales in the quarter ended Sept. 30.

In all honesty, I’d rather drive a worse Chinese car than have people assume I worship the muskrat.

Chinese EVs are ahead of their US counterparts in features, quality, and price. China actually invested heavily in EVs while the US automakers did everything they could to stall adoption. I would rather drive a BYD or NIO any day compared to a GM or Tesla.

I suggest you watch reviews of the BYD fleet. They are incredibly positive.

I’ve been eyeing Lucid Air as a possible replacement for my Tesla.

Despite common belief, I actually love my car, it meets all my needs, I lucked out with a great build. I had plans to drive it well into the six figures of mileage (which is more than I can say for any car I’ve financed).

But I feel ashamed every. single. day. that I’m driving it now, because fuck musk.

It baffles me why the board doesn’t oust him, but whatever.

Bold of you to assume it’s possible to make a car worse than a Tesla.
