Ok but why did they then proceed to turn the oven on without anything in there?

They couldn’t find them for three days, they went to preheat the oven because apparently they don’t use it much. They found melty glasses, isn’t too hard to imagine. What I don’t understand more is why they were placed in there. What situation would lead to someone putting their glasses in the oven.
