I’ve been thinking about it and I wonder if they could be deliberately making their regular search worse to push people towards AI features

Not just AI. Deoptimizing search makes people stay on the page consuming ads longer. It’s to get more eyeballs on ads because that’s what google is. An ad aggregation company. That’s how they make their money.
