A Toronto-area man is facing terror charges in both Canada and the United States, authorities say, for allegedly attempting to illegally enter the U.S. to carry out a mass shooting at a Jewish Centre in New York City.

TIL:

Attempting to leave Canada to commit an offence for a terrorist group.

That’s an actual crime… I totally understand “intent to commit a terrorist act” being a crime but I’m baffled we have such a specific law tied to trying to leave the country. What an obscure fucking law.

it’s to stop attempts to leave and commit terrorism from lawless jurisdictions. I think it’s fairly new and related to the short period of time when ISIS held territory in Syria & Iraq. Odd to see it used for the US, but why not.

Maybe it was enacted post-9/11 when the rumour mill was screaming that all the hijackers had funneled through Canada to the US.

This is the third arrest within a month. It’s too easy to get into Canada due the the relaxed federal immigration policies. It may be too late but we need to tighten up who we let into the country.
