yesterday i drove past a school sign in one of the carolinas (idk which, fuck 'em both) that said “PRACTICE YOUR ESCAPE PLAN - NOT YOUR TIKTOK MOVES”
death to america
Genuine question 🙋♂️, did any of yall Non-Americans ever have to do School Shooting/Intruder drills? I always sorta assumed it was normal, is it weird? Also to play devil’s advocate, I think it’s a good idea to have a plan for if it happens but how often were your drills? Ours were like 2-3 times in a schoolyear
French here, yeah everyone in Western Europe is looking at America like “wtf is this shit” on the subject of school shootings. We only have drills for fire, and sometimes local disaster risks like nuclear spillage in my hometown, but only of you were near a potential hazards yknow
Do they have any drills specifically for Intruders? If so it’s probably pretty similar to ours
Russian here. We didn’t even get terrorism drills, despite Beslan happening before our eyes. Then again, we didn’t get school shootings until 2010’s, at least not that I’ve heard.
We had fire drills from time to time, which were always announced in advance and consisted of basically just going outside when the alarm rings, and standing there awkwardly for a few minutes
I’m glad that Fire Drills are basically the same everywhere, just vibe outside for like 5 minutes pretending to be avoiding a fire and not doing anything

I’m currently working in the middle east and it’s actually the other way around; when there’s a fire we go inside cause it’s colder.
Not even in PR, a satellite of the empire which by all practical accounts consumes the same ideological brainrot the US produces, does this shit happen.
*Edit: To echo some other replies, we had fire and earthquake drills, and also for tsunamis.
I think they’re more sane. There’s no open-carry, they do background checks, if you are deemed mentally unwell, then can’t carry, and stuff like that. You know, just the basic stuff you see everywhere.
*Edit: Thought I should add that our Wal-Marts don’t sell ammo or guns out in the open, not sure if it’s like that in every Wal-Mart over there, but not here. You gotta go to a certified armory with your ID and permit. Of course, there’s an underground market, and some folks go that route. But in mainstream society over here, guns are looked at very much like some libs would, they find them scary, unnecessary and dangerous. We do have gun violence, though, but nothing like school shootings, thank fuck.
Been to school in 3 countries and only ever had natural disaster drills (fire, earthquake, flood).
Don’t think I’ve ever met a non-american who thought active shooter drills were anything except horrifying.
Yea I got super used to it, it sounds fucked up but I looked forward to them because it meant classes were shorter by like 10-15 minutes. Tbh a school assembly could’ve had the same effect on my schoolday without scaring me about being shot and killed as an Elementary Schooler. And lemme just let you in on the inside track, the school shooting drills were fucking PATHETIC! They would just make you hide in the classroom. What classroom on Earth has good hiding places? That’s not exactly on the agenda for construction workers or architects, they just wanna make a room with enough open space so students can see and hear the teacher from any part of the room, they don’t build little Batman Arkham-style floor grates and gargoyles for students to use to hide from armed assailants. There were only like 2 students out of 15-25 that were well hidden, it was honestly very disappointing because the drills showed more than anything else that we would all be ABSOLUTELY FUCKED if a shooter came in. Our desks had nothing covering the bottom part, so you couldn’t hide under it, you have to tip over the desk to hide, and anyone with half a brain would know someone’s hiding behind a tipped over desk
Keep in mind that I was like 7 when this happened, I obviously don’t find these tragedies funny in any way, but as kids we would always make jokes about these drills all the time like cracking jokes as to who has the worst hiding spot in the classroom or trying to whisper a joke to make your friends laugh out loud (you are supposed to hide and stay completely silent so by making a friend laugh, the teacher would yell at them) it’s pretty crazy but kids will be kids no matter how pressing the situation. The more I think of it, the more I think of how weird it is that the solution to gun violence in schools is making them hide better rather than trying to do anything to address gun violence.
Did any of yall Non-Americans ever have to do School Shooting/Intruder drills?
Good lord, no. That is not only awfully weird but terrible as well, and even more having to do that three times per schoolyear.
What we had instead was fire drills, and we had one per schoolyear, but I think you Americans are familiar with those too.
Not a single time. There was this exact one mass shooting in another far away state when I was a kid and I remember how irrationally on edge everybody was for a couple weeks, so I can’t even imagine what it would be to have those happening regularly like that. I understand training kids to do it if you already have a school shooting problem, but those are really rare over here.
I’ve even heard from colleagues from gang-controlled regions that, in the case of a shoot out, they usually purposefully avoid having those near schools to avoid collateral child deaths.
Never and I don’t know of any “non US american” who has ever participated in one.
Well I’m glad, they were honestly kinda scary. They get someone to walk through each classroom and call out anyone that they see as they walk around (they don’t actively SAY it but the intention is to basically let the student know that in a real shooter scenario they would be murdered)
I’m American and I never had to do them. We only had fire and tornado drills. And one other drill in high school, no idea what it was for, but we had to walk about two blocks away from the school and back. It was great since it was basically a field trip that took up an entire period.
no, never had it, schools shooting were a rarity in brazil until recent years, there was one in 2009 where the active shooter was an adult man, and one in 2019 where two teens tried to emulate columbine, in the years to come the rate increased and now we have every month or so
Shooting drills aren’t even normal for amerikkka. I’m in my mid-thirties and didn’t know they were a thing until I went to work as a substitute teacher. They were a horrifying bizarre experience, made even more so by the fact that the liberals surrounding me think that they’re normal and that there’s nothing we can do about them.
We had fire drills and intruder drills in South Africa. Fire drills consisted of going to the sports field and bunking class afterwards, intruder drills was just hiding under the desks for 5 min. No shooter drills
We had lockdown drills, but they only started after somebody wandered into the school and threatened students and teachers with a knife. I think they’re reasonably commonplace around here now because periodically there’ll be a wave of bomb threats called in to local schools, but it seemed so shocking to me as an Australian kid in the early 2000s.
On the plus side: Join the military and you’ll be allowed to do this to poor brown kids, and they’ll call you a hero too!
With no context and just going by facial expression, I’m guessing the original is some smug quip about gun control
