It became crime alley after the shooting and they weren’t exactly taking a shortcut either but rather exited the theater to the back alley.

Technically not. It became crime alley earlier in gothams history when a corrupt police commissioner was beaten nearly to death there by a vigilante. That vigilante does have a connection to Batman.

Gotham city : year one sets the origin story.
