Ahh. Two more years of OS updates added to match the already five years of security updates.

Huh, pretty rare for a big company to offer something extra for an older device which they’re not directly making money from anymore. Nice!

I bet it makes it easier on them to maintain less branches of android.

Kinda like how Microsoft is clamping down on how many builds of Windows they are maintaining.

Previously, these phones were only promised three years of operating system updates, along with five years of security updates, the latter of which isn’t changing.

Seems like this adds roughly two years of OS updates but keeps the five years of security updates in place. For those of us on GrapheneOS I think we are reliant on the security updates so won’t be affected, but still overall good news!

Yeah, I was hoping that it was referencing more security updates too. It would put a solid chunk of value into the older versions.

I hope GrapheneOS considers extending their update time period to match! 🙏🤞

That seems like a safe bet.

They won’t because this doesn’t refer to security updates, which GrapheneOS bases their support on.

So it’s great for people who do not have GrapheneOS, but for us that do nothing changes.

For reference, Pixel 7 came with 5 years (I felt gipped when 8 got 7yrs as don’t want to buy a new gOS compatible), so this is poorly researched. If I’ve now got 7 years, please let me know…

You don’t. P7 came with 3 years of OS updates plus two more years of security updates, now it’s just 5 years of OS updates (plus whatever extra security updates GrapheneOS adds on afterwards).

K. thanks for clarity, guess I just saw what was important to me. Still an OK deal, just not as outstanding.
