If a certain critical mass of people like it, it suddenly gets expensive and simultaneously the quality of parts gets worse
The tiktok-ification of fucking everything into a trend is the worst in regards to this. The last few years, it feels like any time I’m interested in picking up a hobby that seems like it would/should be cheap and simple to get into, tiktokers have already blown through, turned something into a ‘-core’ for content, and left nothing but over-inflated prices in their wake.
First off, I don’t think tiktokers have as much influence over the cost of a hobby as inflation and every other market force that has increased prices. Everything is more expensive and blaming influencers doesn’t help.
With that said, it’s like Gen Z saw Millennials being Hipsters who pay wayyyy too much for ‘vintage crap’ and said ‘Hold my vape,’ then went and did the same thing to literally anything else.
That’s basically the attitude of someone who trolls said hobby forums lol
Translation: “No because I wanna feel superior for having that interest.”
I don’t necessarily want to feel superior, I think I just like when my communities are small and it’s a genuine rarity to find someone that likes, for example, the same subgenre of music. Finding someone that likes techno (for example) isn’t rare anymore, so it’s not a special event, y’know?
And you wanting to avoid having niche interests is your desire to feel, ah so normal?
The only good hobbies are my hobbies.
The only way to participate in hobbies is the way I participate in them.
This is an objective fact.
You’re too wrong to even try to correct. But it must be made clear the right way isn’t yours, it’s mine.
This happened to me yesterday. There was a discussion thread on whether Attack on Titan is on par with great literature. I personally agreed with the sentiment and I explained in a comment, why I think so. I got downvoted because it was counter to generally accepted stance in the comment section. I was just trying to foster discussion. They didn’t even argue against my views, just downvoted me. But, I guess that is internet for you, people don’t want to have discussion. Most people are just seeking validation for their views. I am sure I am guilty of it too.
