Assuming you’re going to replace it with anything, where are you going. I downloaded rednote which is kind of like Chinese instagram because it’s a perfect F-you to meta and everyone else to go straight back to Chinese tech. I’ve also heard the names Neptune, lemon8 and a few others thrown around. Where are you guys headed?

(However I believe we’re truly losing something important that won’t be replaced, TikTok was one of a kind in the fact that everyone was on it despite it not being American)

Lemon8 is another byteDance product, if I recall. It’s definitely the popular choice, and I think TikTok has been promoting it on the app. It also will transfer your account to lemon8 and automatically subscribe to people from your TikTok subscriptions if they create an account. I think it also will give your mutuals a notification if you’ve added your account to lemon8. The weird thing about all that, though, I believe lemon8 must also shut down on the 19th because of the way the law is written, but I haven’t fully investigated that yet. So Im not sure why lemon8 would put in all that labor to create an evacuation system from TikTok to lemon8 if it could be shut down too.

REDnote is new to me, but apparently it’s the second-highest search term on the Google Play Store right now, under lemon8.

I’ll probably have both and see how things shake out.

REDnote is a new name for xiaohongshu (小红书), a Chinese short video style social media app similar to douyin/tiktok or instagram.

It would be amazing if Westerners started using it. There’s no Chinese/English ecosystem split like tiktok/douyin has. Chinese and Americans would be together on the same social media platform.

Yeah it’s been pretty fun, and I’ve been seeing people move to it on my feeds

that must mean that nobody i followed created a lemon8 account even though about a dozen or so told me to and it also seems unlikely since i suspect that i follow hundreds of people.

I am going to try Lemon8, but I still am not convinced that TikTok will actually get banned. I think that ByteDance probably had some kind of contingency plan to sell last minute as a last resort and we will see that happen sometime before 1/19.

They’re actively hiring in the US. I seriously doubt they’re getting banned

Is that “active hiring” actually active hiring, or is it the fake “active hiring” where they’re just collecing resumes for a database and real jobs for those advertisements don’t really exist?

I know a guy interviewing with them today, so I’d hope they aren’t stringing him along haha

I don’t know, I think it’s a done deal snd they would’ve sold by now. I don’t want to use a TikTok owned by some American billionaire anyway.

I kinda hope they’re not bluffing.

China has a law on the books preventing them from selling the algorithm though no? Most they could do is sell the userbase, existing content, name, etc. And the reason most people like it in the first place of course is because of the superior ability to curate your own wants compared to western apps which push their own thing. Also the lack of censorship as bad as Zuck and Musk-land.

I honestly hope they don’t buckle. This is a test case, if they do buckle the US will be encouraged to do this kind of bullying to all kinds of Chinese companies. If they refuse to bow and end up banned at least the US knows this gangster-ism has to go all the way and all they reap is lack of competition not the actual fruits of the company which are simply taken home.

Unfortunately probably folks in the US will move to Instagram or to YouTube. I already see a ton of Tiktok stuff literally just copy pasted into YouTube, it’s flooding the platform. I assume Instagram is the same. Most folks won’t care that these platforms will be much more heavily curated and controlled

There’s been a large influx of American TikTok refugees to Rednote, myself included, and I’ve been able to tailor my fyp now with a broader audience pretty easily. A lot of the Chinese community has been very welcoming in the comments also.
