I realized this by accident a few years ago; I was looking for a vet and after checking out several websites I noticed many of them were essentially the same, just with logos replaced. I then spoke to a vet about it and she confirmed they’re all being snapped up by a conglomerate. Unfortunately our government is either incompetent or malicious when it comes to enforcing antitrust.

I had to get two cats spayed last year… My previous vet, who I hadn’t seen since early Covid days, wanted 2 appointments ($120/visit) before they would schedule the surgery ($800), so basically it would have cost me $1,100 per cat to get them both fixed. So $2,200. lol what???

Got in with my friends vet out in the country, about 45 min drive away… $150 each, which included the first appointment. So $300.

Doesn’t the SPCA offer this service? Apparently it’s like $150.

Can we PLEASE start outlawing private equity firms?

They too are a parasitic cancer on humanity. They add no value whatsoever, they see a business that adds great value to humanity and then they attach themselves like a leech to just squeeze them dry and killing it. The net result for humanity is hat services go down, prices go up, humanity becomes poorer with less access to services, and a tiny sliver of human scum gets obscenely rich

Why is this allowed?

Everywhere I’ve ever worked has been bought and destroyed by American PE. All were successful and large Canadian employers doing just fine who caught the eye of PE and in many ways were strong armed into a sale or else the PE would just buy up all their competitors, make a super company, and crush them anyway. I wish Canada would see what’s going on and regulate PE gobbling up all the successful homegrown companies and local industries. Especially now - we don’t need all our major employers here being owned by Americans because what happens what Donny boy passes some absurd law and they have to fire all the Canadians?

Because people in power benefit from it. Simple as that.

I don’t think most people understand the process financialization, its wider-ranging impacts, or how thoroughly it’s metastasized at this point.

I’d put that failure at the feet of every government of the last 40-some years, and on the fourth estate.

There is a private equity firm for every industry. Daycares, physios, dentists, everyone. They all make them “efficient” by cutting services and maximizing profits at the expense of the public, and there’s seemingly no way to stop them.

Pray to Saint Luigi for help

The laws exist because people wrote them. They can change. But some people would rather die than live in a more equitable world.

But I thought privatization is supposed to lower prices!

It doesn’t. And when the bootlickers come out of the woodwork to tell you that private entities are more efficient that the government, it’s a fucking lie.

The only thing that private entities are goid at is maximizing profits by walking the line of pissing customers just enough.
