Hi,

what client for matrix do you use? We are using element, but i am very unhappy that there is no possibility to set a message to unread once its been red to remember for later. Does anybody know a client how has this possibility?

Cheers Philipp

This is not a limitation in element.

It is a limitation in matrix. The read indicator (the little avatar that shows how far users have read the chat) can only move forward in time, never back.

Edit: there is mark unread functionality in schildichat, but only for entire chats, you cannot flag certain messages to find them later.

True, but there’s nothing stopping some client from dreaming up a custom message that labels some previous message “unread”. It would only work in that client though.

On android schildichat allows marking a room as unread. Here’s it’s store page: https://f-droid.org/packages/de.spiritcroc.riotx/
I’ve just noticed that with a long press on the room you can even open it without marking messages as read.

This client is a fork of the official element client. It’s very similar, but it has additional features.

I think schildichat has a web version too that you can use in firefox, but I don’t know if that allows marking rooms as unread.

In Element Web, if you host your own web client, you can enable message pinning. This allows you to pin and unpin messages in a room for later reference.

@scott @whzfux how? I found some reference to a labs feature but it’s not on my hosted Element install

You need to pass it some JSON config to enable Labs.

See, https://github.com/vector-im/element-web/blob/develop/docs/config.md#labs-flags with particular attention to show_labs_settings.
