Speaking Monday at a mining convention in downtown Toronto, Ontario Premier Doug Ford doubled down on threats to cut electricity exports to U.S. border states if the tariffs go through.

I can understand the sentiment, and I was all for it when this whole mess started, but now I think this is a terrible idea. Trump is insane and desperate, his deals are falling through and he’s desperate for a win. Giving him an excuse to call us the bad guys and escalating his actions won’t help anyone.

I agree we need to hit back, but we need to be careful in how we do it.

I cant see this happening. Cutting power exports would sure hurt the us citizens but it would also hit canadians just as bad. Not getting paid for power would be a huge hit for us. I could see some tarrifs being placed on power but not fully cut. Plus ford is a goof and i dont trust a word he says…

Power sector is certain to be saved from bankruptcy if somehow that was threatened. Sure, increasing export tariffs to 100% or 200% is a better response than cutting them off.

Overall export tariffs is the best option to raise revenue without adding to inflation for Canadians.

Yeah, well we couldn’t see tariffs happening either. Get ready for a whole lot of radical decisions in the wake of US fascism. Remember they chose this.

Ford is a Trump supporter. Republican wannabe. He’s just playing along. We’re watching WWE kayfabe.

We’re as fucked as the Americans are. Maybe more. At least the 75 million who bothered to vote Democrat who don’t want any of this. One third of them know what’s going on. Meanwhile Ontario is still voting on pointless traditional small-c versus small-l partisan issues.

I find myself uninvested in all this seeing how scripted it is. It’s distraction. I mean it’s been the Trump era MO for 10 years. Conservatives here love it. They’ve been cribbing notes. Why aren’t more people seeing it this way. The bluster. The table pounding. It’s all an act.

Whatever the bigger picture ends up being in this great big geopolitical realignment. Canadians are in for very rude awakenings whenever they start realizing it isn’t anymore about nebulous partisan ideologies but fundamental shifts in the world we live in. If the notoriously boisterous Americans are asleep at their own wheel. Where does that leave us.

Only cut it off to Red States. Only cut it off for Republican registered customers and businesses.

Can he even do that?

I would assume not. The grids, except for Texas and some of Alasaka IIRC, are all fairly interconnected and share a lot. I’m assuming it comes in to some point over the border and enters the broader grid. Maybe it would be possible if it enters in multiple states to cut individual states off (which would still likely impact neighbors), but I don’t know anything for sure.

Except that the power grid doesn’t work that way.

And as a long term goal, let’s get proportional representation: !fairvote@lemmy.ca. We are trying to restore control of government back to the people!
