Admins are communists of a Soviet (leninist/stalinist) flavor so many people have an ideological beef with them.
.ml is run by the lemmy developers. They chose .ml for marxist-leninist. They also run lemmygrad.ml which is pro russia pro china and pro authoritarian. The admin team and mods have leaked over into lemmy.ml, so what comments get banned or removed tend to be those critical of russia and china. Just take a look at the modlog and yptb
For what it’s worth, Marxists aren’t actually “pro-Russia,” more anti-NATO and anti-US Imperialism. Marxists critically support Russia’s stance against these, while disapproving of its severe LGBTQ repression, Capitalism, etc.
Marxists are generally pro-PRC, that part is true, and it isn’t the same kind of support as Russia as Marxists do generally support the PRC’s economic model.
Nothing is without critique, of course, but equating the support for Russia and China is deliberately misleading.

Lemmy.ml is maintained by the Lemmy developers, who are Marxist-Leninists. As a consequence, many users of Lemmy.ml are Marxists of some stripe or Anarchists. Moderation generally favors Marxism, and favors AES states, and does not tolerate Zionism or chauvanism, etc.
Some of the other instances disagree with this general slant on ideological grounds, and have also defederated from Hexbear.net and Lemmygrad.ml, the 2 largest explicitly Leftist instances, so there is frequently sabre rattling.

I use it because it’s more broadly federated than a generalist instance like Lemmy.world, and also has a good number of Leftists. I also use Hexbear.net.
