You guys know that DW is basically German “propaganda” it is literally the German government’s news outlet. And I don’t mean in a public broadcasting kind of way.

Edit.: because this comment could be and has been seen as to placative and one-sided, pls. also take regard of my answer below.

Hey, can you provide a source for that? I just tried to find something on wikipedia about it. While the organizational form positions DW significantly nearer to the government than the rest of german public broadcasting, it is not like the government does the journalistic work or has a direct say in it. So while a critique on DW being too close to the federal government seems fitting, calling it propaganda and the literal governments news outlet seems far fetched.

I didn’t mean to say it in a demeaning way. DW is certainly a better news outlet than many others, especially major US ones. And how much sway the government actually has is unclear to me as well. Nevertheless their conception from day one has been and still is to be a spokesman for the German state in its entirety.

Taken directly from their website.

Or for those not German speaking, paraphrasing loosely: Founded by the federal government their mission was to tell the world of the young federal Germany and to help reintegrate Germany into the international community of countries medially.

My goal was not to belittle their work - I really like their work from what I’ve seen so far. However I wanted to point out that the media outlet that was founded to paint Germany in a positive - though often critical- way, is now apparently more trustworthy than a majority of major (sort of independent) US news outlets and gets cited alongside the Guardian.

But because you’re still correct on my style of writing to be quite a bit to placative, I will add a disclaimer to my initial comment.

Also, the journalists they employ are obviously beneficiaries of the freedom of press as well as of opinion, which drastically limits the influence of the government on their reporting.

Now legally speaking, they are an independent legal person of the public law. Meaning they have been granted a degree of freedom in the DWG (Deutsche Welle Law), § 68 DWG states that there is no legal way of taking influence on their journalistic work.

Now, any further legal dive would be too much to really follow, plus I am too lazy. They are however quite a unique legal product that is a beneficiary of the constitutional rights as well as having to follow them themselves

urged Republicans to seek a “full investigation into how this happened, the damage it created and how we can avoid it in the future”.

How it happened: Republicans

Damage it created: Hard to predict, because it isn’t like the damage done is instant.

How to avoid it in the future: stop electing Republicans.

Didn’t we have security leaks during his first term too?

We are far beyond elections saving us. Trump’s threat of dictatorship not withstanding, we’ve got a stacked court system ready to rule in Republican favor, and Republicans have gerrymandered their way to victory where they would have otherwise lost.

No amount of voting is going to fix this mess.

He was the security leak during his first term. Nobody knows who saw all the classified files he took home with him last time or the ones he’s taken home this time but I suppose he didn’t just smuggle them away from prying eyes so he could show them to people who already have access.

Well, he did read things that he was invited to read, he even admitted to it, so it’s completely his fault. Clear cut case.

Dude straight up stole classified documents, “LOST” (sold) a bunch while foreign nationals were occupying nearby rooms, then lied about it, then tried to hide it, then lied about trying to hide it. Then tried to hand wave it all by saying he prayed declared thought about them being declassified and therefore perfectly legal to do the things he didn’t do.

To name a single instance.

The vast majority of the dumbass shit the current administration is doing is the same dumbass shit they did the first time around, just faster and dialed up to 11.

Immigration enforcement in 2017 also directly impacted agriculture.

The security leaks, demonizing LGBTQ+ folks, wanting to disband agencies, pretty much all of it was tried the first time around and mostly stopped by lawsuits and the career conservatives that didn’t want to rock the boat that much. The guardrails have been almost entirely removed this time around, so it will be the same stuff but worse and they knowingly voted for that because MAGA voters are terrible people who would rather hurt themselves than allow someone different to be treated equally.

I’m not totally sure how to moderate this with our “no politics” rule in this community. I’m thinking the situation (and this meme) is more independently funny than about a political agenda or bickering, so I’m leaving this up.

The spirit of the rule is simply to prevent this community from being another political battleground, and I don’t think this post crosses that line.

“everything is political” is a phrase designed to reduce the actual meaning and implications of the word politics. That said, I agree with the point of your message

Who on earth uses a lemmy.blahaj.zone account to spout that kind of transphobic nonsense?

No, it’s a phrase meant to demonstrate that “no politics” is a rule only usable by people whose existence isn’t political. Straight white men existing is not political, but when women’s rights, immigrants rights, LGBT rights are all under attack by the right wing, suddenly their existence is “political” because their right to exist is actively under attack by the current regime.
