Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a second hand phone (Budget around $400aud, ~ 1kMYR or ~$260usd)

My dream phone has:

  • Dual Sim (preferably at least one esim)
  • USB C with OTG (preferably at least usb3)
    • 2 usbC ports would be extra nice to have (allow me to dream)
  • 3.5mm headphone jack (preferably 24-bit/192kHz)
  • microSDXC slot (preferably dedicated)
    • if not dedicated then one where sticking the Sim chip to the SD card hack works
  • decent custom rom and with it android 15 support!!
  • at least 8GB RAM
  • not a potato for a camera
  • battery life to last bored geeks day
    • at least a work day of music and some comics and some brain rot on the socials and when I get home I got 20% left

Nice to have would be:

  • ok Selfie camera
  • fully charged in a hour
  • 5G
  • wifi 6
  • a decent GPS chip

Phones I’m currently kinda looking at:

  1. Sony Xperia 1 IV
    • insufficient custom Rom support, 2 guys are working on a linage port
  2. Sony Xperia 1 iii / current favourite
    • ok custom rom support, bit old, unsure about camera quality
  3. Poco x5 pro (5G)
  4. Samsung A72

I’m a big fan of OnePlus, had the 1 and 7 but hate the trend towards no headphone jack and no SDcard support and then not even a second USB port

I used LinageOS a while back and quite liked it … On my last phone I used YAAP and loved it

Cheers for reading … PLS drop your 2 cents below

Xperia 1 for sure imho, Lineage is amazing (and the phone too, good form factor, very decent cameras).

But can’t really tell you if IV or the safer choice III.

For a further 2 cents I would consider Xperia 1 V or even 5 V (coz LineageOS), tho I’m not sure if you can get that deal on the second hand market.
(And as a random though, if you want a nice stylus the Note10 has Lineage support, but you sacrifice the 3.5mm hole & it’s 2019.)

Cheers, I’m dreaming about the 1V but it’s currently way out of budget.

Need to do some reading on the 5 V because they are cheap where I am

One thing to be concerned about with the 5V is it doesn’t have all the 4g/5g bands in certain countries (United States, India). Not sure about Australia.

Otherwise as someone who was in your shoes awhile ago, 5V was my dream phone for the small screen and finally addressing the issues the 5 iii and iv had. Ended up going with the 5 iv which is great, but certainly lots of issues. Namely, both the 1 and 5 iii and iv have major overheating issues due to a bad chip.

Also on the Xperias the weird screen ratio takes some getting used to, think I still prefer the more popular ratio.

Yeah, the price diff between 1 & 5 is pretty much valid/balanced unfortunately :( (iirc).

But that doesn’t mean 5 is bad. I personality use zoom a lot (& never the front camera) so that limits my phone choice a lot.

Also an option:

Redmi Note 14 5G Redmi Note 14 Pro 4G

I’d love to know what people think of those, I bought the 2 on alibaba a long time ago and has been using xiaomi redmi note pros since then to great success, they’re (the pro at least) cheap and powerful, the only backside seems to be the not so good camera (IDK it works for me).

But there are always stories about the chinese-chinese phones so I’m all ears.

I personally prefer the POCO variations of these, as they are more fleshed out. But nothing wrong with them. Just make sure you get the variant you want.

Interesting, I’ll definitely check them out!

I go with the redmi note “pro” versions so with some more CPU piwer, RAM & storage.

Cheers, Only the 4G one has an audio jack and card slot, not sure if I want to force my self to 4G

But thanks for increasing my list, the 4G one seems to also not be available around here

GSMarena has an advanced phone search functionality where you can select your criteria and then allows pinning phones for side-by-side comparison.

A galaxy s10e, super solid phone in a compact size (that’s for me a plus), the battery is a bit on the line but quite decent.

Seems a bit old but I guess with a battery replacement it could be nice

I second that. Good balanced specs and reliable, relatively compact form factor.

Cheers for pointing out that there are still OnePlus phones with jack(low quality but better than nothing) and card reader.
