The actual community name hasn’t changed from !spaceporn@lemmy.fmhy.ml, right? I guess changing that would mean moving to a new community.
Wouldn’t now be the perfect time to change communities in that case? The subscriber count is still low and people won’t really complain.
Even though I agree dropping the “porn” moniker from the community is a good way to separate from reddit. I think that changing the community name is not a good idea when the URL isn’t also changed. It’s just going to add unnecessary confusion. If there was a way to migrate the community to a new name, then the change would be good.
You can still find it if you search for the displayed name on lemmyverse.net (currently the site has a problem where it doesn’t show you all communities, hopefully they fix it soon because it was working before) but if you don’t remember the permament name it could be hard to do this link !spaceporn@lemmy.fmhy.ml . To make a link like that you have to write “!{ permament sub name}” and it will search for you ocmmunities with those names so you can click on them to make this link, like that:
Why change of the name?
I’ve had multiple users express to me that they would like to see a name change to lose the porn moniker. If it makes people more comfortable then I’m fine with it.
Maybe it’s because I used reddit for 3 years but I didn’t see anything wrong with “porn” in the name. Probably because pretty much everything had this word in the title name so I had to get used to it haha.
I had been using Reddit since 2011 and didn’t see anything wrong with it either. That sub was actually part of the non-porn, porn subs like earthporn, foodporn, humanporn, etc. I just wanted Redditors to be able to find something familiar, but I don’t mind changing the name at all. I’m going to make a poll tomorrow to see if there’s a general consensus on what the name should be. Someone suggested something descriptive like “Space is Beautiful”, which I actually like and it may be better if the community here ever incorporates more discussion in addition to images, but we’ll see.
