Exciting news today that my collaborators have been granted the first licence in NZ to cultivate Psilocybe ‘magic mushrooms’ for use in helping addiction to methamphetamine. I am providing advice on the mushrooms. #mycology 🧪
I’m all for anything to do with helping addicts. Do you know if they are looking isolate the active components for research, or if the clinical side will look to use the whole shroom? I’m guessing through the invocation of Rongoa Maori that it’s possibly the latter?
This is great news.
I guess in NZ they call meth P? Hard to tell from the article.
That’s the name that stuck in the late 90s/early 2000s when it became a thing in NZ. I think because at the time it was mostly made from psuedoephedrine (which the govt has since banned, our cold medicines are terrible as a result).
Nowadays you see it called meth a bit more but the nickname has stuck around
I seem to recall the name P being short for Pure, which was used to describe it when compared to Speed.
This article seems to back up my memory.
Congratulations on the licence and best luck to you and your collaborators!!! Thanks for sharing!
This sounds like really important research. A local lawyer told me up to 80% of the crime in my rohe is linked to P in some way. It is a terrible burden on communities.
Congrats! I’ve heard so many good things about mushrooms, they also seem to treat depression.
Do you know if they’re still looking for people in the trials? :) I’ve done srooms in the past and loved it.
