My brand new iPhone 15 appears to have a burn in issue with the status bar where it leaves behind a dark faded version of the icons there. (I just updated from IOS 17.0.2) is this normal?

Not normal. There was an issue with some 15 models having image retention that looked like burn-in but it turned out to be a software issue. If you have the latest update and still seeing burn in I would go to apple for a return / exchange.

I would need to see a photo, but it’s not possible to burn in a screen in one day.

iPhone 15 runs an OLED screen.

OLED’s CAN get burn in, but it generally takes running a device 24x7 for months.

It tends to fade a little over time and updates to the current battery percentage and it happens when I enter control center
