Granted, what were the Soviet forces supposed to do? Keep pushing past the lines established during the Yalta conference and fire on the British and Americans to trigger a Third World War? What would the Soviets have gained from several million more dead? In our world they were already facing a devastating demographics crisis that has lasting effects till today, and even if they had somehow achieved some sort of victory, the population would have crashed to irrecoverable levels.

True, but that was an extremely small clique that was laughed at and told to can it. McArthur and Churchill were considered insane for their assault plans.
