“nobody:” indicates that in the kid’s perception, the split up was out of the blue. The “nobody:” formulation indicates a moment of initial silence, or of everything being fine. The contrast of initial silence/everything seeming ok, and a dramatic break up of one’s parents adds an extra layer of drama and comedy to the situation. It serves a purpose.
In rural areas of Europe, especially back in the day, kids were expected to pick up chores for the household. Clean, go walk the cattle, etc. It’s why big families thrived - everyone had to do their bit. The paying rent could be seen as a modern version of that. But working alongside your family to care for each other would have a meaningful and positive vibe, while the rent thing comes off as alienating and cold.
What do they mean by “too extreme”? Too left?
Every year I see this shit and without fail, I chuckle every time for the past 15 years.
