4th and 5, the national championship on the line right here…
Updated the banner and the sidebar! Now I’m just waiting for someone to accuse the mods of rigging the poll, given 3 of the top 4 teams…
I think people assumed that helmet comms would be deployed and simply work like the NFL. But NFL stadiums generally don’t get as loud and crazy as several major CFB stadiums. Arrowhead and Lumen Field are the only two that come to mind as coming close, but how do they compare to a Penn State white out game? Or to a chorus of ringing cowbells in Starkville? Or the paddle people in Stillwater?
The silly guys on the sidelines with the signs are probably never really going to go away unless the NCAA expands the use of wearable tech like smart wristbands (some D3 schools are permitted to use them this season as a trial).
So at first I found it indefensible, but then I listened to Ross Dellenger explaining it on his podcast and it sounds like the current rules (and the NCAA’s unwillingness to change) force schools into this position because they won’t be allowed to foot the bill 100% directly, even if certain court cases play out in favor of the athletes. Sadly, that means many schools will probably follow suit.
Glad they can keep a good college atmosphere though. That’s something Chris del Conte was able to do at Texas while offering more premium options. And our student tickets were already expensive… envious at what Tennesse students were paying
I would say that although a lot has changed, it feels less like a paradigm shift than when NIL or the transfer portal were introduced. Even the introduction of targeting as a rule or the clock no longer pausing on 1st down felt like bigger changes than some of these, at least to me.
I thought it might be fun to go to the Vandy-Texas game this year but decided against it, one of the reasons being the stadium isn’t done. I’ll try to make it next time we play in Nashville though
On the whole, this seems like a surprisingly reasonable bill. I bet (heh) this never gets passed though, even if they really watered it down to appease the gambling lobbyists. I see they’re taking the public health angle (good), but they would probably also need to push it as the moral high ground to get through the conservative steering committee and onto the House floor for a vote
My ballot. Computer poll. It’s still early so I’m not going to dissect it too much. Still grossed out that it thinks so highly of oklahoma, but I’m expecting them to plummet next week once they run into the buzzsaw that is Tennessee. FSU is still too high because of their SOS. One thing I do like is how it give kudos to Indiana, who is otherwise flying under the radar with a nice start to the season.

Looking at their coaching histories, I didn’t realize both are in the Todd Graham tree. Honestly, they feel like they have very similar career trajectories. Napier is obviously on the scorching hot seat and his departure could (and should) be imminent whereas Norvell has a little more runway. But I think FSU would justified in pulling the plug if they go 4-8 or worse, regardless of the last 2 years of success.
Both programs also should have the resources to poach a decent sitting P4 head coach – the thing is do they want to compete with each other for the carousel? There’s only one Kiffin. But of course there are other good options (I think Eli Drinkwitz, Dave Doeren, and Mark Stoops are all possibilities). But to prevent the next guy from meeting the same fate, the athletic departments are going to have to rein in expectations from their rabid fanbases (to compare them to Texas, that was really what doomed Charlie Strong and Tom Herman from the start).
