Lots of non-techie people rely on their techie friends to fix their broken wifi or crashed laptop for free and us techie friends still do it, sometimes with a grumble, but just as often with a smile. It’s great that you’re looking to compensate and support the people running these sites and I strongly encourage you to do so, the more you do the more practical and reliable the network will be. I just want you to keep it in perspective that as long as there are techie people out there who like to play with this sort of stuff in their spare time, and enjoy the feeling of “contributing”, and believe me there are lots of us, we don’t need to live in terror of all the server gods deciding one day that it’s too expensive and the whole network shuts down. There will always be lots and lots of people running small nodes and contributing far more than their fair share, and that’s okay. While they someday may not be enough to support the whole network on their own, they probably are right now and I think it’s still much too early to be alarmed about the health of the network or that there’s too much centralization on a few big servers. That will pass, and if it doesn’t, you can be sure people will keep relentlessly talking about it, because it’s important.
Yeah it actually makes me feel like there’s some astroturf going on. The “reddit defense” backlash seemed to start very suddenly, some while after spez’s comments about how the blackout wasn’t hurting them got popularized and people started renewing the subreddit blackouts. Almost everyone seemed at least tenatively supportive up to that point, then suddenly these waves of hardcore “reddit did nothing wrong, won’t someone PLEASE think of the profits! Everything’s fine, just keep posting here, fellow users!” HailCorporate-style comments start pouring into every subreddit and every thread talking about the issue seemingly simultaneously. These is something that seems deeply disingenuous about all of those comments.
Yeah I speculated this was the case when the prevailing opinion of comments on the site made a sudden and drastic change in attitude. IIRC it stated shortly after spez made his infamous comments about how the blackout didn’t matter and they didn’t see any impact.
100% support this. We are falling almost as far behind on energy generation as we are on housing, and the consequences will be at least as dire if not worse. A warming world means more air conditioning will be required, an electrifying transportation network means more electricity use, decarbonization of industries like steel foundries and chemical plants again means more electricity. It is insane that we haven’t been investing more in the capacity and resiliency of our power grid. This is a step in the right direction but it’s only the first step of many that are needed. New builds on the Pickering and Darlington sites next, then let’s talk about Nanticoke.
“Number One: In 1945, corporations paid 50% of federal taxes; now they pay about 5%. Number Two: In 1900, 90% of Americans were self employed; now it’s about 2%… It’s called consolidation; strengthen governments and corporations, weaken individuals. With taxes, this can be done imperceptibly over time.” - Leo Gold in “Deus Ex”
I’m not sure it’s guaranteed the first, unless the Aug 2022 explosions at Saky airbase really were just a “careless smoking” accident (or perhaps sabotage, more realistically).
It’s great though, looking forward to more.
I’m Canadian so that’s actually perfect! What a convenient option to have on their search, I’ve actually never really played with their search filters before. MemEx FTW!
Completely agree with you about Corsair too. They used to be such a solid, low-key brand. The “black and white” pirate-flag style simplicity is what I liked about them. I’m sure they’re still reasonably solid, but the lust for RGB has consumed them completely.
That would be a plausible explanation for the original perhaps.
Either way, if you are not familiar with this meme, I am truley sorry for your lots.
