I’m surprised you’re having trouble federating with kbin.social- that’s always been working for me from my personal instance. I have trouble federating with a few lemmy instances though. Lemmy.ml is still blocking the kbin useragent. And the communities of infosec.pub, sh.itjust.works, sopuli.xyz, among others- cannot be discovered from kbin.

This is part of the reason why I chose kbin- It should have the most potential content to federate with.
I wouldn’t expect to see mastodon content in Lemmy at the moment; I’m pretty sure that functionality hasn’t been built in. Kbin can view Mastodon content as “microblogs”. I’m not sure how ‘viewing lemmy content from Mastodon’ is supposed to work since it doesn’t work in the other direction.
I think Ernest has mentioned that he used PHP for quick prototyping and eventually plans to rebuild with something else. If you look through his post history you’ll find something.

Consider that we’re trending away from poop memes. It’s not good but it’s a step in the right direction.
