FWIW Lemmy has fully replaced Reddit as my go-to toilet reading material, and I’m sure there are many other lurkers around here who don’t post much and thus don’t show up in these stats. The more niche communities are still lacking in content, yes, but these things are best left to grow organically over a long period of time to maintain quality. It was the same on Reddit too before the enshittification escalated.

While I wish there was more transparency about this decision before action was taken, in this case it’s kind of understandable due to the servers being hosted in Germany and them having really draconian piracy laws. Just hoping that this won’t lead to a chain reaction of other communities being removed due to legal complaints.

In the meantime, happy to get my piracy content over at db0.

I downvoted your other post because while yes, in an ideal situation people migrating from Reddit would join local instances that fit their individual values the best, I don’t agree that forcing people to join other instances than .world is the right or that it will make Lemmy better.

It doesn’t matter if the reason is because they read about in a guide, it has most of the communities they liked, or even because it’s the biggest instance currently, people’s freedom of choice should be respected. How do you think complete newcomers would see Lemmy if even the most recommended instance turns them away? Probably that the whole thing is very exclusive.

The general sentiment around here seems to be that people like how the admins are handling things so far and that they feel inclined to be more active because there is enough users to generate discussions on smaller topics as well, so your claim that this instance is somehow damaging Lemmy’s image seems a bit disingenuous to be honest.

I agree 100%. One of the reasons Switch got me back into gaming was the ease of picking up and getting into a game, and the minimalist UI is a part of that. Even opening Steam these days gets your eyeballs immediately flooded with ads and call to actions, so it’s nice to have at least one system that is only focused on playing games.

Migrated here from RIF (RIP), lemmy.world being suggested on top of the how to join guide definitely played a part in choosing this instance along with all the recommendations from other users.

Definitely feel much more inclined to comment here than on Reddit as of late, all the regurgitated meme shitposts and karma farming bot comments were getting really old. If it takes donating / paying a sub to keep Lemmy human discussion focused, that’s what I will do.
