12 years for me and i’m kicking myself for letting myself get so entrenched after i had experienced the same thing before; fediverse, here i come! lol

10+ years from now reddit will be at reduced popularity, but still a major player in the social media scene. i say this because i left other social media sites before the term “social media” existed and those old sites are still chugging along, making money for the new owners despite a 75%-ish drop in users and content.

i’ve been wantin to leave reddit for a while and the changes gave me the final straw i needed to make the jump; you should be leaving reddit because it benefits you somehow. there’s nothing you can do to affect reddit unless you have enough money to affect a change in its direction.

i wouldn’t leave reddit for years because i knew that the severe lack of niche communities that only reddit has would eventually engender regret and seeing 2 full porn dedicated fediverse instances completely bereft of anything besides vanilla and/or straight porn is the first time i’m feeling that regret.

fortunately reddit has managed to act like a big enough asshole this time to force to me to stay this course.

shills; toxicity; brigading; endless conspiracy theories.

we have that same nuance here in the united states and it’s be shown that the judge’s approval is nothing more than a rubber stamp.

i like dumpster fires too so i’ve been checking it out too and i’ve learned that the subs i frequented are so niche that not even spambots have caught on yet; which i think is odd considering that they’re nearly all porn/porn-ish related. they don’t exist in the fediverse either and i was wondering if cutting off the (seemingly) only source of that content was a good idea; but just now i noticed that the active mods for a few of them are not mods anymore and also some of the biggest contributors haven’t contributed anything in the last week or so maybe my decision won’t matter.

why not try a different desktop-environment/window-manager; there’s many to chose from and most will let you customize them as far as you want.

i learned the hard way about a decade ago that i lack the patience and sufficient enough attention to detail to run a public facing server of any kind; so the biggest benefit of using pfsense is peace of mind.

the 2nd biggest benefit is a perpetually self auto updating firewall and significantly improved capacity without having buy to a new router every few years. i started this rebuild because i’m anticipating a gigabyte connection and the previous network adapter i was using for pci pass through would have been the biggest speed bottleneck.

the 3rd biggest benefit is that i also use the host as an everything server including backups, extra storage, internet accessible storage, print, media, torrent, automatic vpn, automatic ad blocker and tv via kodi and i don’t have to configure most of it since those capabilities are click-on-a-checkbox-to-turn-it-on easy thanks to the pfsense software.

finally: each time i have to do it, i learn at least one new thing about the foss ecosystems/projects related to the components/services that i have to build and how they’ve changed or how alternatives are needed since the last time i did it.

btw: the server is handling the dhcp and wifi using networkmanager because hostapd is about 25% slower and pfsense is only the firewall and most of those services i mentioned earlier.

i only like my mac because of the speakers; ultra the bright screen; and the cmd & ctrl key separation. as soon as someone else decides to build a laptop with those qualities (preferably better) i’d ditch mac in a heartbeat.
