Once upon a time we thought that inviting people to join the Information Superhighway would bring them together and herald an age of unity and shared purpose.
We didn’t realize that we were opening the noosphere to subversion and attack.
It wasn’t long before weaponized memes were deployed to deepen societal divisions. Old antagonists brought their wars to the digital frontier. Commercial entities outcompeted their FOSS forefathers and to reshape discourse. Engorged vectors emulated human creativity and threatened to forge new underclasses.
Was the utopian dream wrong? Were we naive to believe technology could unleash humanity’s potential? Or are these mere birth pains of the future we were promised?
When an online conversation is getting too heated, stop responding for a while. Give everyone a chance to calm down and get perspective.
I’m learning so much from these comments…
I feel like the causality is wrong here.
- Our politicians stop building for the future. eg, they stop building affordable housing; and cut funding to train healthcare providers.
- Our quality of life decreases as we can’t afford housing and can’t get quality healthcare.
- People look for the fastest possible way to limit strain on our systems.
- Politicians take strain off the systems by reducing immigration.
Immigration (and changes in the targets) isn’t the problem. Start fixing the systemic problems and Canadians will continue to welcome newcomers. And we’ll be happier overall.
Canada does have issues with racism that should be addressed, but I don’t think that’s directly related to feelings about immigration for most Canadians.
Meh. It’s not good, but there’s not a lot we can do about it.
I’m not feeling good about Canada’s future. The cost of living is increasing, we don’t have enough medical staff, and the price of rent is too damn high. Our conservative politicians want to play culture war, and our left leaning politicians are AWOL.
It’s fertile ground for populism, and nobody competent seems to have a plan.
So I guess you could say I’m a bit bummed.
