I cringe every time I hear another guy refer to women like this

Itโ€™s fine if itโ€™s consistent imo.

Men and women - ๐Ÿ‘

Males and females - ๐Ÿ‘

Boys and girls - ๐Ÿ‘

Guys and gals - ๐Ÿ‘

Men and females - ๐Ÿ‘Ž

Men and girls - ๐Ÿ‘Ž

Men and chicks - ๐Ÿ‘Ž

males and females is still psychotic if youโ€™re not specifically talking science like biology, statistics, etc. adjectives as nouns are rarely a good sign in general; itโ€™s almost always derogative.

also boys and girls would be fine except most people who use (or claim to use) boys do it in familiar sense only. theyโ€™d never call a 40 year old jacked man they donโ€™t know a boy, but theyโ€™d easily call a grown ass woman they donโ€™t know a girl. exceptions are some phrases like โ€œbig boyโ€ or โ€œmy boyโ€ in endearing sense but thatโ€™s not how โ€œgirlโ€ is generally used, which is a substitute for โ€œwomanโ€.

A lot of prior military folks will use males and females just because thatโ€™s how itโ€™s been drilled into them. Male and female latrines, not men and womenโ€™s bathrooms. Male and female barracks, not men and womenโ€™s dorms. Male and female standards, etc etc.

dehumanization is part of military. thatโ€™s not really an argument for it.

I donโ€™t think thatโ€™s true unless you mean within the context of referring to people or something, e.g. the blacks, the poors. But then stuff like โ€œthe richโ€ and โ€œthe unemployedโ€ I donโ€™t really take issue with.

yeah, youโ€™re right but theyโ€™re two different cases. notice how when itโ€™s right you donโ€™t pluralize it with an -s because some adjectives have a form of a plural noun, so they donโ€™t have a singular form: โ€œa poorโ€ or โ€œa blackโ€ is just yikes. you can find words like โ€œrichโ€ as plural nouns apart from the adjective forms in the dictionary. you might find โ€œfemaleโ€ and โ€œblackโ€ as a noun for people too, but they should be marked offensive either directly or in usage notes.

so thatโ€™s the distinction. โ€œblackโ€ or โ€œfemaleโ€ donโ€™t exist as plural nouns like โ€œthe richโ€ or โ€œthe blessedโ€.

interestingly enough there are exceptions. there is no plural noun โ€œthe gayโ€ but โ€œgaysโ€ usually isnโ€™t offensive as a noun, but also โ€œa gayโ€ is weird and offensive. language is complicated.

The ONLY time itโ€™s fine is if itโ€™s in a medical report or scientific paper. Written by actual doctors or scientists. And it is done to dehumanize the subject to make it easier for, say, a medical examiner to write a report without breaking down.

Using male and female for people is inheritantly dehumanizing, and thatโ€™s only ok in very specific circumstances.

Context is king, so I donโ€™t think this is universal. Decent list though.
