Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 6 has arrived, and despite costing $100 more, it feels like an incredibly iterative update.

I recently had to replace my phone and just needed something working. Not even a fan of Samsung but I bought a Z Flip 4 for like $300 and it has like a scratch or two on the screen I barely notice. It’s been fantastic and I see no reason to really get a 5 or 6…

Ya fuck that, especially on experimental technology. No way that thing will last, for twice the price of a regular phone.

1200 for me and that felt rough. I used to do the 700$ phones. I miss those days. But I keep my phones for 4-6 years usually and if you amortize it, it’s not that bad in the end, I use it every single day extensively.

I seriously considered this. I love the form factor. then I saw the price. problem is while I like the form factor im not really willing to pay much more for it. So it needs to be like less than 100 more than phones with similar hardware levels. I also hate the way they put screens on the outside. I want to be able to flip it closed and for it to not be active or glow or interact in any way at that point. that to me is the point of being able to flip closed.

I have a 5. Now that the new Razr+ is out, and they seem to have addressed most of the previous issues, that’s the one I’ll be looking at next.

Why? Samsung software. It’s pervasive and hard to remove, or even often just to disable. And Samsung collects all of the data. It’s crazy how much is shipped back to Samsung servers.

If you don’t care about that kind of thing, the hardware is nice. But I’m looking elsewhere for my next flip phone.

Motorola’s software is a lot less intrusive. Off the top of my head there is not a single important feature I can think of which is locked behind a Motorola account (though I am yet to get the Android 14 and Hello UI update, so I’m not sure if that changed things), whereas Samsung forces you to create and login to a Samsung account to access many of the features which make One UI so customisable. You can disable/uninstall/not create an account to minimise data leakage but then you’re missing out on some of the stuff which makes Samsung phones particularly good (like Good Lock).

It would be nice if the exterior display was just like an e ink one that showed a clock and notifications like the little lcds on old flip phone lids

Still no Dex, makes no sense when the SoC and hardware are more than capable.

And wifi 6e instead of 7, despite ultra having the same soc + has 7

It makes sense when you factor in the development and maintenance cost. How many people have a desk with monitors, keyboard and mouse but don’t already have a more powerful machine they use there? It’s a high price to pay for the 1% of users that will ever try it.

They already implement Dex on their high-end phones, let alone their A-Series.

Why support and test and promote something for your mid-tier and then decide not to do it for this one premium model.

Presumably they have determined that the cost is not worth it, given the demographics of their customers. The Z-Flip seems to be pretty clearly targeted at young women - would they actually use a desktop mode in their smartphone?
