EDIT: The update is done - Lemmy Host now running 0.18.5

This is a short post to inform you that we will be updating Lemmy World to the latest stable release of Lemmy. This is small update that fixes issues with federation of moderation actions performed by admin accounts. There is a bigger update, v0.19.0, just around the corner but the developers wanted to get this federation issue fixed as soon as possible.

The server will be updated at 1700 UTC - if you want to know when that is in your timezone you can click here.

Since this is a small update, it shouldnโ€™t take long. Downtime should be minimal. Please feel free to check both https://status.lemmy.world and https://dash.lemmy.world before and during the upgrade.

Lemmy is more stable now compared to a month ago. This is the growth that matters, not user counts. Thank you devs for the hard work.

How difficult is it to apply these updates?

I was thinking of setting up a personal Lemmy instance, but the idea of getting it all set up and working, and then an update breaking things and my not having the advanced skill to fix it, worries me >.<

Itโ€™s gradually improving but its 100% not ready for full production outside of enthusiasts who are willing and patient enough to take the time and effort to wrangle with its quirks. If you want to self host (especially as a single user) and arenโ€™t prepared to make vigorous backups and arenโ€™t extremely technical inclined/are a regular average user itโ€™s *really *not worth it right now. It likely will be in time, but thereโ€™s a lot of issues with lemmy that need to be addressed. Thankfully the coming update will address some of its most serious though. It helps to be involved in the admin matrix community chats and generally accepting community assistance, but itโ€™s just far too much to keep on top of for most people. If I didnโ€™t have a community and mine was a single user instance, I 100% would have shut it down weeks ago and migrated over to a larger instance.

We need something more simple compatible with Lemmy for hobbyists and for those who donโ€™t want to be all day setting up things every time.

I also was thinking about my own personal instance, because I want to see everything federated and then choose what I donโ€™t want to see, but everybodyโ€™s tutorial is different.

Man, I miss the good olโ€™ times with โ€œupload via FTP, run the โ€œinstall.extโ€ file in a browser, setup database credentials and then you have itโ€.

Fediverse needs single-user applications.

There are some in development! Gotosocial is very very single user friendly and easy to setup and so is writefreely. I do hope in time there is a โ€œlemmy liteโ€ version that has local communities disabled completely and more local user friendly settings. It likely will in time, but we will see.

It depends on your setup and the nature of the updates.

This update is small. If you are using docker/compose, youโ€™ll have to do nothing but update the version number of the image.

Large updates sometimes have database migrations that take a long time.

Once in the past, there has been an update that raised the minimum supported Postgres version which was the most tedious. But cases like this are rare.

I did mine in about 30 seconds. Most of that was just making a backup of my old one.

FYI for anyone wondering, CEST is two hours ahead of UTC so unless Iโ€™m mistaken this upgrade will happen at 1700 UTC.

Yeah but UTC is easier. I know Iโ€™m UTC-4 at the moment (stupid DST).

That said, thanks for all you do! Iโ€™m sure running this Lemmy instance canโ€™t be easy!!
