Summary

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock warned that forcing Ukraine into an unfair peace deal would lead to more war, rejecting any agreement that concedes territory to Russia without security guarantees.

She urged Europe to pressure the U.S. to support its NATO allies. Meanwhile, Trump dismissed Zelensky’s role in peace talks, claiming Ukraine has “no cards” to negotiate.

U.S.-Ukraine relations remain strained, though some American officials signaled continued support.

Trump’s team insists Zelensky will eventually accept a U.S. rare earth mineral deal despite Kyiv’s current resistance.

Probably ‘extortion’. What has Ukraine done ‘bad (ethically wrong) enough to merit blackmail’?

They dared to resist an imperial power. That seems to be the lesson trump wants to teach the world: Don’t dare resist.

Seems like a fun way to have 20 new nuclear-armed countries by next year.

Trump did extort zelensky the first time, which resulted in his performative impeachment

No one will accept a deal with the US for the next 20 years. Zelensky would get a better outcome if he made a pact with the actual Devil than with those bozzos in DC.

Idk why, but this made me think of a philosophical quandary. If you sell your soul to the devil to save someone else or your country, do you still go to hell?

I say this as a US citizen, for AT LEAST the next four years, do not rely on the US for ANYTHING. Even if Trump says you can count on the US, even if he signs a contract in blood, it isn’t worth even wiping your shit with.

He will give everything to Putin. That’s the only thing you can count on.

It’s time for a different superpower to pick up the reins or ascend. The EU can become that, but they really need to stop pretending the US is going to do anything for them.

China has been working toward that superpower status for some time. They’re a lot more ambitious than the leaders in the EU and much more brazen.

I would say they’ve had superpower status since the 1950s, since the wars in Korea and Vietnam.

Nukes are cool and all but wouldn’t a super power at least need some over seas power projection like aircraft carriers? I’d say China has been, and still is a regional power albeit rising

Y’all willing to give us a couple hand me down super carriers?

The rest of the world will pick up the torch, it’s just going to be a long time before we can replace the US due to how large and how stable it’s been in the past. No one really expects an ally to flip the table, of a game they’re winning at, for the lulz.

This should be a wake up call to invest in your own carriers and military. Stop letting the US have the monopoly on firepower.

Seconded. The US can no longer be trusted. God speed, and I wish you the best.

Germany has relied on the USA since the BRD was founded. The left party (Die Linke) was and still is the only party in parliament that’s against it.

Ukraine does not have nuclear weapons. They gave them up for peace…

No one’s ever going to do that again. Trump has guaranteed a new era of nuclear proliferation.

But they have the capability right? Truly if they wanted to have a nuke I’m positive they could build one.

The stuff you need to make this sort of thing isn’t off the shelf, they would have to buy or build a shitload of these

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas_centrifuge

and its not cheap, these are just maintenance cost (and upgrades)

https://www.statista.com/statistics/752531/nuclear-weapons-spending-worldwide-by-country/

Ukraine’s gdp is around 170 billion, so it isn’t really something they could afford to just crank up.

On a personal note, I hope we as a species never fire another one of these weapons ever again.

While the nuclear weapons where physically present on Ukraine soil, the country did not have operational control over them.

Not all require launch codes. Especially not those delivered by plane. The rest they could dismantle and repurpose.

Rules:

  • Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:

    • Post news articles only
    • Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
    • Title must match the article headline
    • Not United States Internal News
    • Recent (Past 30 Days)
    • Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
  • Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think “Is this fair use?”, it probably isn’t. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.

  • Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.

  • Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

  • Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19

  • Rule 5: Keep it civil. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.

Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to “Mom! He’s bugging me!” and “I’m not touching you!” Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.

  • Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.

  • Rule 7: We didn’t USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you’re posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.
