Have you tried using wood pellets instead of clay litter? Total game changer…
Do you have a good solution for the smell? I recently switched to wood pellets and I swear I can’t enter the room if my cat has recently used the box.
If it’s #2, I tend to scoop (with a plastic dog bag, I don’t use one of those ) pretty much right away, tie it off & put it in the trash. I’m with @iamericandre@lemmy.world, changing to wood cut down on smell quite a bit. I change it out once a week now.
FWIW corn litter is also a decent option IMO. I imagine it’s kind of between the better-absorbing clay and the more natural wood chips
