Exactly. They aren’t moving to capitalist imperial periphery countries, those that have been ravaged and left poor after decades of exploitation, but rather the imperial core itself where the wealth is flocking and where someone with an education and not under the boot of debt can have a comfy life. I can see why someone would defect from East to West Germany for economic reasons alone. It’s good to point out when people bring up fleeing from these countries that they aren’t exactly moving to Nigeria or El Salvador or India.

With all that wealth plundered from the rest of the world they ought to perform better.

Maybe your family should have pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and choose not to suffer under communism then.

When you don’t understand politics (read: can’t be bothered to delve into it) it’s easier to just base your opinion on easily digestible superhero movies where everything is reduced to the obviously good side being superior and benevolent while the other side is comically evil who kills babies for sport or does some other absurdly malevolent act that leaves no room for the viewer to contemplate whether they’re actually bad or not. It’s why people easily jump on the Slava Ukraini wagon as the western media has made Russia into some terrorist state that woke up one day and decided to invade because they felt like it, which sounds similar to a certain children’s cartoon in the mind of the tweeter in this post. It’s also probably one of the reasons tabloids like Radio Free Asia are so swaying because their gimmick is to make countries like the DPRK and ROC a laughing stock for the amusement and sense of superiority of the westnerner who can’t be assed to research the claims these tabloids are making because they already reaffirm the preconceived biases westerners hold about those countries.

how do you become so dead that you reject the basic human urge to help other people, to let people help you?

Individualism has made people think that it’s part of human nature to not help eachother but rather only yourself. It’s depressing how cynical my society has become.

They did when Covid hit, but to be fair a global pandemic is a good enough reason for a recession to happen unlike a preinstalled boom-bust cycle.
